Shatterling - Shatterheart

Shatterheart may just be the right album for the right time, the single-handed invention of a new style – call it dreamcore if you dare – the two-faced beast that will be sullen and pensive on the hand, and belligerent and upfront on the other.

Shatterling is a unique entity in the world of industrial hardcore, for many reasons, as producer Mikael Salmela hails from Finland – not exactly a hardcore hotspot; he really takes his time with productions – Shatterheart being only his second album since his 2014 release on NOISJ; and his sound is truly one-of-a-kind: Luscious layers of ambience, playful keys and melancholic piano lines, soothing pads generate a melancholic, cinematic backdrop which is juxtaposed by the massive martial kicks that come packed with a healthy serving of distortion.

This unique mood unfolds over eight all new tracks and an extended remix from a 2018 compilation track, while some variation comes from the input of other artists: Remixes have been contributed by Dark. Descent. label head Cubic Nomad and fellow Finnish technoheads ASCII Agenda, while Shatterling has put his hands on tracks by Void Settler (a decade-old obscurity) and Hypoxic & Natrion (from a 2018 Traumatic compilation).

Shatterling has never fit into genre pockets, but this is truly a sublime result of his art – Shatterheart will get your imagination going like only the best of soundtracks can!
