Cubic Nomad – Light Errant

“I will not serve.” – Cubic Nomad’s debut album from 2011 is a bold statement of non-conformism: While never denying the industrial hardcore heritage, Maurice Pinkster adds a wealth of different sounds and ideas, shaping a style of its own. “Light Errant” is largely characterized by an impulsive clash of shuffled beats vs. machine rhythms, imbedded into an emotional rollercoaster of atmospheres, set in a fictional world of futuristic sci-fi and mysticism alike.

Starting with the frantic opener “Alchemists”, the listener is confronted with a wild tempest of beats and percussions, relentlessly pushing the album forward, while a tense atmosphere permeates the mind. Deep breaks, ominous samples, but also IDM-style melodies (“Antidote”) or a technoid minimalism (“Amaury”) will be encountered. “Faith” allows for a melancholic - and beatless – soundscape interlude and “MCP” is an abstract, scorching piece of slow rhythm noise. Naturally, the collaboration tracks with Moleculez and The Relic (schizophrenia lurking!) lean strongly towards a sturdy hardcore sound, with “Walker” being a recognized classic track still featured in many DJ sets. The final statement is “Moby”, all lush and sullen ambience foreshadowing the sound of Cubic Nomad’s later non-hardcore albums.

“Light Errant” put Cubic Nomad on the map proper and gained recognition across genre boundaries, and it is still as topical as it was at the time of its conception!
